City task force suggests Gateway improvements

Staff to evaluate recommendations

The City Council discussed the task force report on the Saratoga-Sunnyvale Gateway Corridor Specific Plan for improving the area of the Saratoga-Cupertino border at its July 9 meeting. A task force ranging from 12 to 26 individuals met six times from April through June to discuss recommendations for the area.

Suggestions in its report include adding a signal at the Seagull Way intersection, considering reducing the official speed limit in the Gateway corridor to 35 miles per hour and locating bus stops at appropriate locations in the area.

Other suggestions include raised medians along the corridor's length, putting existing and new utilities underground, developing a continuous dedicated bike and pedestrian pathway system, establishing a street tree program, developing a uniform logo for business signs, installing a Gateway arch at Prospect Road and considering a new street name for Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road to avoid confusion with Saratoga Avenue.

The council accepted the task force report and directed staff to evaluate the recommendations and complete a list of implementation measures and their associated costs to present to the council.
