It was nice seeing well-known artist Helen Caswell back in town for her one-woman art show opening at Gallery Saratoga. She was one of the gallery's founding members. Caswell said she loved seeing her Saratoga friends at the opening. She now lives with husband Dwight in Sonoma and often uses her grandchildren as models for her paintings.

Aegis Gallery, next door to Gallery Saratoga, also was holding an open house. Mary Ann Henderson has some great pastels of our local farmers' market on display there during the month of July.

I'm back in town from Greece and Turkey. Joan Gomersall, with whom I traveled, treated me to dinner and a fireworks display at a Turkish seaside restaurant on my birthday. Also watching the fireworks nearby were Fidel Castro and Jimmy Carter. They had been attending a summit meeting on improving the world environment in the 21st century.

Speaking of fireworks, I hear the city's Fourth of July celebration at Montalvo was a rousing success. Celeste Blaseck said it was a beautiful day and a wonderful way to relax and smell the roses while being entertained and surrounded by nice people. Marlene Duffin helped the Lions Club sell flags. She said people were feeling patriotic and she thought it was a great community venture.

Fred and Gladys Armstrong just returned from Hawaii. I don't know if Fred has a special look or what, but it's the second time a hula girl has picked him out of the audience to dance with him. He should have the steps pretty well down by now.

The Chamber of Commerce had a mixer at the Youth Science Institute last month. It seemed appropriate that jellied worms were served as part of the refreshments. Chamber president Jeff Evans decided to sponsor a snake there, paying $50 to have it fed for a year.

Sorry to learn about Lorraine Smith's death. She worked at Citibank (Argonaut branch) and was once given a courtesy award for being so kind to customers.

We have visitors from Alaska this month. Peggy Corr and Bea and Wally Schmidt's families are visiting. I saw their grandchild, Sara, at the farmers' market. She said the market was very different from anything in Alaska.

Two of Lois and Steve De Brock's grandchildren also were here from Alaska. The grandchildren attended the play Rumpelstiltskin at Montalvo and loved it.
