    Soccer, volleyball, baseball summer camps

    Saratoga Soccer

    The Saratoga AYSO Region 27 soccer league, in cooperation with Major League Soccer, will host Major League Soccer Camps Aug. 7-11 and Aug. 21-25, 9 a.m.-noon, at Congress Springs Park.

    The camps are recommended for all players in the under-6 to under-14 programs. The cost is $100 per child for each camp ($150 for one child for both camps). Each camper receives a T-shirt.

    Volleyball Camps

    Los Gatos volleyball coaches Joe Ripp and Tom Jack will host camps for pre-high school and high school players this summer. Jack is the boys volleyball coach for the Wildcats, and Ripp coaches the girls team.

    * Los Gatos High and the Vision Volleyball Club will co-host a girls youth volleyball camp this summer for players in grades 5-9.

    The camp is slated for Aug. 1-4, 1-3:30 p.m. each day. The cost is $95 per player, and each camper will receive a T-shirt.

    Ripp, who will direct the camp, is in his 11th year as a girls volleyball coach and is entering his eighth season as the Gatos head coach. He is also the director of the Vision Volleyball Club and is a teacher at the high school.

    * Jack will be joined by Olympic gold medalist Pat Powers as the two host a volleyball camp for high school athletes on Aug. 18-20, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each day, at Los Gatos High.

    Powers, the current men's volleyball coach at USC, played nine years on the U.S. National Team, winning Olympic gold and playing in the World Cup and World Championships. He was an All-American at USC, leading the Trojans to an NCAA championship, and spent 10 years on the AVP professional beach tour.

    Powers has been coaching volleyball since 1981, and is beginning his fifth season as the head coach at USC. His 2000 team posted a 22-5 record and was ranked No. 3 in the nation.

    Jack has led the Wildcats to a 61-4 league record during his five years at Los Gatos. He has been coaching volleyball for 11 years, including the direction of several summer camps.

    Camp With the Pros

    The 10th annual Camp With the Pros, a summer baseball camp for players ages 7-12, returns to the Santa Clara Valley in August.

    The final camp session will be held Aug. 7-11 at De Anza Park in San Jose. Hours are 9 a.m.-1 p.m. each day, and camp fees are $109 per player.

    Camp director is Roger Samuels, a former Branham High School and Santa Clara University star who went on to pitch for the San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates.

    The camp will feature instruction in fundamentals, sportsmanship and self-discipline in a small group atmosphere.

    Spartan Camp

    San Jose State University baseball coach Sam Piraro will direct the annual Spartan summer baseball camp for players ages 6-17 at the Spartan practice field across from Kelly Park and Municipal Stadium.

    The schedule includes:

    July 31-Aug. 4-- pitching camp, ages 13-17, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., $125; and hitting camp, ages 12-17, 2-4 p.m., $125 (both sessions $200).

    The camp, run by Piraro with the help of assistants Doug Thurman and Dean Madsen and other area high school and junior college coaches, stress fundamentals.
