Sheriff's statistics show Saratoga crime is down

By Michelle Alaimo

Crime statistics compiled by the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Westside Substation show that crime in all categories is down in Saratoga when comparing the first six months of this year to the first six months of last year.

"Officers were able to apprehend several subjects doing several auto burglaries and thefts," Deputy Mark Eastus said. "Apprehension of these citizens made a difference." He added that auto burglaries are down to five cases from last year's eight and attributes the decrease to the apprehension of a Saratoga resident suspected in several auto burglaries.

Thefts are down significantly from last year's 171 cases. So far this year, there have been 121 cases of theft. The statistic includes all categories of thefts, from petty to grand.

Assaults were down to 31 cases from last year's 39. Eastus said the assault figure includes the attempted murder of Saratoga resident Joseph Wong, 45, allegedly by his son John, 21, on April 11. The attempted murder is classified in the assault statistics figure as aggravated assault, Eastus said.

Robberies are down four cases from last year's six. Homicides remain constant at zero, and reported rapes are now down to zero from last year's one case.

While the statistics are low, Eastus said residents can reduce crime statistics even more by making sure that doors and windows are locked in cars and homes.
