Saratoga NewsNews BriefsDon Wolfe decides he won't run again Saratoga Mayor Don Wolfe has decided not to run for re-election to the City Council in November. "I enjoyed the service and it was a great honor to serve, but this being the land of opportunity, I think perhaps someone else should have the opportunity to serve," Wolfe said. Wolfe was first elected to the council in 1994. His is one of three council seats up for grabs in the November election. Of the other two--belonging to Paul Jacobs and Gillian Moran--only Moran has said she intends to make a second run for her seat. City Clerk Betsy Corey said that so far, only Moran and one other Saratoga resident have requested the papers necessary to file for candidacy. Deadline for candidates to turn in their paperwork is Aug. 7, but it will be extended to Aug. 12 if no incumbents file. The city is charging a $520 fee for candidates who wish to have statements published in voter pamphlets, but there is no filing fee. For more information on filing for candidacy, call Corey at 867-1269. PG&E offers some energy-saving tips With California entering the dog days of summer, Pacific Gas and Electric Company officials are offering customers ideas for keeping energy usage down while still keeping cool. PG&E suggests residents keep their draperies and blinds closed during the day to keep heat out; use heat-producing appliances such as dryers, dishwashers and ovens early in the morning when possible; turn off lights when they are not needed; switch to fluorescent lights, which are more efficient and generate less heat; cook in the toaster oven, microwave or broiler, or use the barbecue; dry laundry on a line instead of using the dryer; and keep swimming pools covered with approved solar pool covers or thermal blankets when not in use.
