City applies for clean air funds

The City Council has approved the submittal of two applications for funds from the Transportation Fund for Clean Air program administered by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

These funds, which are derived from collection of a $4 surcharge on motor-vehicle registrations paid within the district's jurisdiction, are used to improve air quality through vehicle emission reductions and implement transportation control measures.

The city is applying for $32,000 to fund the acquisition of two replacement compressed natural gas-fueled vehicles, an automobile and a light duty pickup truck, for the city's fleet.

The purchase of these vehicles is already scheduled in the adopted 1997-98 budget. The second application is for $63,000 to fund arterial traffic management improvements along Saratoga Avenue.

Technology plan moving forward

The city is moving ahead with implementation of its Technology Master Plan. During the next quarter, the city plans to select new software, hire and train a technology coordinator, implement the new telecommunications system, upgrade the local area network, purchase a central computer and replace 10 to 15 old computers with new Pentium-based PCs.
