Trial date set for softball coach

Former Westmont High School softball coach Todd Lafferty is scheduled to go on trial on Aug. 14. Lafferty, 27, is charged with seven counts of sexual acts with four minors.

Lafferty currently lives with his parents in Saratoga, but was arrested in September at his Campbell apartment. He coached the Los Gatos High School girls' softball team during the 1998-1999 school year and previously coached softball at Westmont High School.

Lafferty will be tried at 8:30 a.m. in Department 24 of the Santa Clara County Superior Court on 190 W. Hedding St.

    District offers grant money

The Santa Clara Valley Water District is offering grants of up to $25,000 to community groups for waterway monitoring, restoration and protection. The Grant-In-Aid program, approved by the water district board of directors earlier this year, is a $250,000 pilot program designed to get civic groups to take up the task of waterway stewardship.

The district manages the drinking water supply and coordinates flood protection for Saratoga and the rest of Santa Clara County. It is also responsible for the health of more than 700 miles of streams in the county.

The Grant-In-Aid money will go to any qualified organizations for a one-year period to improve waterway health. Applicants have until Aug. 17 to apply for the money. Applications are available at www.scvwd.dst.ca.us or by calling Karna Carlson at 408.265.2600.

    Library closes down, moves

The Saratoga library shut its doors Aug. 1 and will remain closed until Sept. 4. That's when it will reopen in its temporary home behind Sacred Heart Church.

The closure means summer readers have a little extra time to get through that pithy novel. The library is not requiring books due during its closed period, Aug. 1-Sept. 3, to be returned until Sept. 4. The library won't have a bookdrop during this period either, so readers can keep their tomes a little longer.

Library cards are good at any of the eight other locations from Los Altos down to Gilroy.

    Call 408.867.6126.
