    Local runners third

    Matt Bates of Los Gatos and Jesse Alejandro of Saratoga were members of a 4x800 relay team that finished third at the Club National Junior Olympics in Sacramento recently.

    The team, running for the Reebok Aggies, ran 8:45.9 and was made up of the top three 800-meter finishers from the Central Coast Section (Bates, first; Tony Martinelli of Serra, second; Alejandro, third) and John Hujrrie of Logan from the North Coast Section.

    Alejandro led off the relay with a 1:58.8 split, and Bates followed in 1:55.9. Urrie was third with Martinelli anchoring in a blistering 1:51.9.

    A team from Texas won the race in 8:42.0 with another Texas team second.

    Ali Chavez of Los Gatos ran on the 4x100 relay team for the Cheetahs Track Club, but the foursome failed to make the finals. Chavez will return for her senior year at Gatos in the fall.

    Soccer camps

    Major League Soccer Camps will return to Saratoga this summer for players in the under-6 through under-14 age divisions.

    Camps are slated for Aug. 13-17 and Aug. 20-24 at Redwood Middle School. The cost is $115 for one week or $180 for two weeks, and players will receive a soccer ball, camp T-shirt and a voucher for a San Jose Earthquakes game.

    Youth Camps

    The Los Gatos-Saratoga Recreation Department has announced its schedule for a series of summer sports camps.

    A mini-basketball camp for youngsters ages 4-7 will be held on the outdoor courts at Fisher Aug. 6-10, 9 a.m.-noon each day. The fee is $74.

    Sports camps that feature softball, basketball, soccer, recreational games and films will be held at Daves Avenue School in Los Gatos the weeks of Aug. 6-10 and Aug. 13-17.

    AYSO Soccer

    The Saratoga AYSO Region 27 is holding registration for players ages 5 and up interested in playing in the fall season. The registration fee is $100 per child and space is limited.

    Players must provide a birth certificate, a doctor's name and phone number, medical insurance information and the name, phone number and address of an emergency contact.
