Smell of the greasepaint is all in the family

    By Mary Ann Cook

YOUNG THESPIANS: Two hometown products are part of the cast of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, playing until Aug. 6 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, a production of the Peninsula Youth Theatre.

Fiona Lawson plays the narrator and Peter Thuener plays Issachar. Lawson, 16, is a junior at St. Francis High School, whose theater experience started at age 3 when she was in a revue with her parents.

The revue was staged by the Redwood Mountain Cloggers. Her parents, Marcia and Hank Lawson, met when they were both appearing in Brigadoon with West Valley Light Opera. Theater is a family affair, since sister Jillian, 12, has also been in local productions.

For PYT, Fiona played Rosie in Bye Bye Birdie, Gilmer in Godspell, Irene in Crazy for You and Scrooge's girlfriend in A Christmas Carol.

Peter Thuener is a sophomore at Saratoga High and has been involved with theater since he was 6 when he appeared in the revue On With the Show, produced by the Saratoga Drama Group. He was an extra in the movie Mrs. Doubtfire when he was 9, appearing in the outdoor school scene.

For PYT his most recent appearances were as Grandpa Joe in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Innkeeper in Fiddler on the Roof and Huck Finn in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. In the Children's Christmas Carol he took on four roles.

Tickets for Dreamcoat are $12-$14; times are 7:30 p.m. on Friday; 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call the box office at 650.903.6000.

YOUTH AWARDS: Joanna Mimi Choi and Richard E. Choi received Commendation Scholarships of $200 each from the Silicon Valley Charity Ball Awards Committee recently. Joanna is a graduate of Saratoga High School who volunteers with Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary.

She is vice president of the Junior Auxiliary, and has volunteered at the hospital for the past three years. She plays flute and piano, and organized a performance for patients this spring with other musically inclined volunteers.

In high school she was on the student council and was captain of the cross-country team. She will attend Stanford this fall and major in human biology. Richard is a Los Gatos resident, and a graduate of Bellarmine, who also works as a volunteer at the hospital.

He is president of the Junior Auxiliary and has logged 400 hours of hospital service since volunteering in '98.

TRAVELIN' TWOSOME: Intrepid travelers Ruth Bauer and Olive Stocking say one of the best parts of their trip to the Greek Isles and the Amalfi coast was catching the flame ceremony that lights the torch that touches off the Olympics Game.

"It was wonderful," says Bauer. And yes, the trip was planned with that event in mind. The Bauer/Stocking duo like to do their own mapping, taking unbeaten paths, rather than joining tours. That way they can stay as long as they want whenever a certain site takes their fancy.

They often do much of the final scheduling after they reach their destination. To explore the Greek Isles they hopped from island to island by ferry after making final arrangements in Athens.

CATTLE BARONESSES: Three women share chairing honors for the major fundraiser of the American Cancer Society in the area--the Cattle Baron's Ball, which opens on Sept. 23, at Moffett Field. The three are Brookes H. Brown, Phyllis Romine and Sandi Conniff.

Brown is the founding president of Grandview League, the auxiliary that produces the ball. A longtime member of the ACS board of directors, she has also served on the San Jose-Cleveland Ballet Council and Eastfield Ming Quong Auxiliary.

Romine is a volunteer for the Santa Clara County Medical Alliance and a trustee with the San Jose Cleveland Ballet. She is co-founder of the group Friends Fighting Cancer. Romine and Brown live in Los Gatos. All three have been personally affected by the disease.

WREATH WORKSHOP: A wreath workshop will be offered by Virginia and Mary Lou Saso in the Saso Herb Garden on Aug. 12, from 10 a.m. to noon. The wreaths will be composed of oregano and lavender grown at the herb garden, and will measure about 15 inches in diameter.

Cost is $55 and includes all materials. Advance registration is required. Call 408.867.0307 for more information.

PICNIC/HIKE: The Guadalupe Group chapter of the Sierra Club will hold its annual gourmet picnic hike on Aug. 19, departing Castle Rock Park at 9 a.m. The picnic will be at noon at Byington Winery and includes wine. The winery is off Highway 9, west of Summit.

Picnic tickets are $12 in advance, or $15 at the winery; a map will be sent with tickets. For more information, call Kerch at 408.996.0614.
