Art group hosts local artists
The Saratoga Contemporary Artists invites all interested members of the community to attend its Aug. 17 meeting, at which time award-winning watercolor artist Jane Hofstetter will give a demonstration and provide a critique of SCA members' works. A signature member of the National Watercolor Society, Watercolor West and the Midwest Watercolor Society, Hofstetter has taught art for more than 20 years and has had pieces featured in many national and international books, magazines and catalogues.
The meeting takes place at the Saratoga Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave.The SCA is a community organization that promotes the arts and lets artists of different levels and styles socialize, network, review each others' works and occasionally paint together. For more information, call 408.866.1309.
Outdoorswoman tells of hiking
As part of its ongoing series of community lectures and programs, REI Saratoga has invited outdoorswoman Marisa Gierlich-Burgin to present a slideshow and talk about backpacking in the American Southwest. The coordinating author of Hiking the USA, Gierlich-Burgin will share information about backpacking opportunities in southern Utah and northern Arizona. These include Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park and Capitol Reef National Park. REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center.
Big names at Villa Montalvo

These include country singer Dwight Yoakum on Aug. 13, Chuck Mangione on Aug. 19, comedian Sandra Bernhard on Aug. 20, eclectic pair Aimee Mann and Michael Penn on Aug. 23, rockers George Thorogood and the Destroyers on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, soft rock singer Jackson Browne on Sept. 5 and 6, and Ruben Blades on Sept. 14.
