    New ALTRANS program delivers

ALTRANS assisted parents and children in finding alternative commutes to Redwood Middle School in Saratoga by offering a new private shuttle service.

Each school day during the pilot program's initial 10-month period, ALTRANS reported transporting 19 children in two vans, picking them up at home and delivering them to school.

In all, ALTRANS was able to eliminate 1,825 one-way vehicular trips and 1,168 round trips during the 10-month program. Approximately 8,979 vehicle miles were eliminated by the use of the shuttle service.

In addition to the K-12 shuttle program, ALTRANS developed a fixed-route shuttle service between West Valley and Mission colleges. The shuttle service is open to college commuters and employees living in the Saratoga/ West San Jose area.

On July 28, the West Valley-Mission Community College District accepted two compressed natural gas vans to be used in the ALTRANS shuttle service. The vans were acquired through a grant written by ALTRANS to the Petroleum Violation Account, which is administered by the California Energy Commission. The vans will be placed into service in August.

This makes a total of five vans ALTRANS plans to use in continuing and expanding its shuttle services for education programs. For more information on the organization's shuttle programs, call Jill Meyers at (408) 741-2683.

    Updated Highway 17 news available

Drivers used to hopping the hill--and getting tied up in horrible traffic--now have a friend besides those warning signs on the approach to Los Gatos--TravInfo's Highway 17 hotline.

Winter storms did it again, messing up areas along Highway 17 and causing a big cleanup job for Caltrans. Because the highway is being cleaned up and repaired throughout the summer, and accidents happen regularly, traffic is often reduced to one lane.

Commuters and beach-goers driving over the hill can now call 817-1717 for up-to-the-minute traffic information specifically for Highway 17, and can hear about alternative routes in addition to information on public transportation and carpooling.
