Open Space District board has vacancy

The Midpeninsula Open Space District's Ward 1 Board of Directors seat, which represents Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Saratoga, parts of Cupertino and unincorporated county areas, will be up for grabs on election day in November.

Candidates must be 18 years old by election day and collect 50 signatures to qualify. Anyone interested in running may pick up papers at the clerk's office at 330 Distel Circle in Los Altos. Deadline to file papers is Friday, Aug. 7. If the incumbent does not file, the deadline is pushed ahead to Aug. 12.

The district manages 42,000 acres in 23 open space preserves from San Carlos to Los Gatos.

For more information, check www.openspace.org, or call district clerk Deirdre Dolan at 650/691-1200.

Computer-savvy residents sought

The city of Saratoga is looking for a local Microsoft Word and Excel spreadsheet wizard to help as a volunteer computer assistant at City Hall.

The assistant would work with the volunteer program manager in the city manager's office.

For more information, contact Jennie Loft at 868-1218.

Animal services gets a new name

The Humane Society Animal Services Department is changing its name to South Bay Animal Control Services, effective Aug. 1.

But animal services by any other name is still just as helpful, officials say, stressing that the change is in name only.

The new South Bay Animal Control Services will continue to provide animal control and licensing services for the cities of San Jose, Santa Clara, Milpitas, Campbell, Cupertino, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno and Saratoga.

Although the level of services varies from city to city, the agency will still perform such duties as responding to complaints of domestic animals causing nuisances, rescuing sick and injured stray and wild animals, removing dead animals, investigating reports of animal attacks and bites against humans, patrolling for and impounding stray animals and investigating reports of abuse and neglect against animals.

For information call the agency at 727-6529.
