Council to pick library architect

The Saratoga Library Expansion Committee's choice of architectural firms for the proposed expansion of the Saratoga Community Library will be considered by the City Council at the council's meeting at 7:30 p.m., Wed., Aug. 6. Two weeks ago, the committee chose Spencer and Associates, of Mountain View, to head up the project. The same firm designed the Saratoga Village Library in 1927 and the Community Library, located on the corner of Saratoga and Fruitvale avenues, 50 years later.

Saratoga Library commissioners recently expressed concern about the project's support when a possible phase-out of the commission appeared on the commission's agenda, apparently suggested by Interim City Manager Larry Perlin.

Perlin said he never favored a disbanding of the library commission at this time, only a postponement of meetings while the expansion committee worked on the expansion project. Because members of the commission also serve on the expansion committee, Perlin said his intention was to cut down on staff liaison time in light of reduced city staffing. To confirm the city's support of the library commission's effort and quell fears of a phase-out, Mayor Gillian Moran recently sent a letter to the commissioners, assuring them their commission was safe.

County boards seek applicants

The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors is seeking residents to apply for open positions on a number of county boards and commissions.

Commissions with openings include the Charter Review Commission, which reviews the county charter and makes recommendations regarding potential changes; the Planning Commission, which considers land-use decisions under county jurisdiction; the Ethics Commission, which seeks to encourage ethical behavior in county government; and the Human Relations Commission, which is designed to help eliminate discrimination in the county and to promote equal rights in the areas of employment, education and housing.

Interested residents should contact Supervisor Joe Simitian's office at 415/965-8737 or 299-3540. Applications should be returned by Aug. 15 to Simitian's office at the County Government Center, 10th floor, 70 West Hedding St., San Jose, 95110.
