Saratoga NewsOn CampusAcademic scholarships to Germany available High school students between the ages of 15 and 18 with basic German language skills are eligible to apply for a scholarship to spend an academic year in Germany. Academic Year in the USA (AYUSA) International is now accepting applications for the German scholarship, which covers program fees, cultural orientations, placement with a German host family, enrollment in a local high school and in-country support. Harvard picks SHS student Saratoga High School student Jennifer Ellen Chin is attending the Harvard Summer College program, which began June 23. Chin, who will be a senior at SHS this fall, was one of a few students chosen from around the world to attend the program. Chin said she hopes to attend Harvard after she graduates from SHS. West Valley teacher receives recognition Sandra Ladd, a West Valley Community College psychology instructor, has been selected to receive the 1997 National Psi Beta/Virginia Staudt Sexton Faculty Adviser Award. Ladd, who was nominated by the WVC Psi Beta Chapter, will be given the award on Aug. 15, at the American Psychological Association's national convention in Chicago. The WVC Psi Beta Chapter has been sponsored by Ladd since 1982. District offers free lunches The Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District recently announced it will provide free and reduced-price meal programs for eligible students under the National School Lunch Program. Household size and income are used to determine eligibility for the meals. Application forms are being sent to all households in the district. Interested families may also pick up an application at their school principal's office. Applications can be returned at any time to the school. Saratoga student chosen for Shakespeare class Sarah Hollenhorst, a junior at Saratoga High School, will attend the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's 1997 Summer Seminar Aug. 4-16 in Ashland, Ore. Hollenhorst is one of only 65 students who will attend the festival. More than 140 students from across the country applied. The two-week program is designed for theater students who have recently completed their junior year in high school. The students, who stay on the campus of Southern Oregon State College, will learn from theater professionals, attend festival plays and work together on projects. Cornish & Carey honors Saratogan Sara Epsztein was recently named a Cornish & Carey Scholar in Westmont High School's Senior Awards Program. Epsztein received a scholarship to Carnegie Mellon University, which she will attend this fall. Epsztein and her parents, Francoise and Michael, live in Saratoga.
