    Montalvo receives money from state

The state parks and recreation department recently allocated $300,000 to Montalvo to be used as part of the Saratoga arts facility's new artist-in-residence project.

The money is to be used for constructing educational space and the restoration of open space around the 10 new artists' cottages currently under construction.

The funding comes as part of the state budget approved by Gov. Gray Davis on July 26.

Montalvo plans to build an educational facility where visiting composers, writers and painters can interact with local students.

This will allow the arts center to continue a program to bring high school students, including those from underserved communities, onto the grounds of the late Senator James Phelan.

The state money will also allow Montalvo to restore indigenous trees and plants near the artists' cottages. As part of the landscaping, a riparian area will be created to give wildlife a larger habitat.

    Gun control groups merge

On October 1, the Million Mom March will merge with the Brady Campaign and the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. Both organizations are dedicated to fighting gun violence through grassroots activism and legislative action.

The Brady Campaign is a 25-year-old group; the Million Mom March was founded in 1999.

    County offers to train composters

Santa Clara County is offering free training to area composters to turn them into master organic waste recyclers.

Participants, who must be county residents, will receive training in the art and science of composting and also join field trips and environmental outreach projects.

In exchange for free classes and training materials, composters are expected to volunteer 50 hours toward outreach and education.

The county will begin the classes on Aug. 29 at Emma Prusch Regional Park in San Jose.

    Call 408.299.4147 or email compost@pln.co.scl.ca.us.
