Alice Carter
Obituary
Alice Carter
Remembered by family and friends alike as an "active girl with a sunny disposition who put a tremendous effort into everything she did," young Saratogan Alice Frances Carter died July 22 after battling cancer. She was 5 years old.
Alice was born June 10, 1996, in Ipswich, England, before settling in Saratoga with her parents and sister. Even as her health began to decline as a result of cancer, she remained a dedicated student at the Saratoga Parent Nursery School, from which she graduated in May.
She was known for a sharp eye for detail and a penchant for doing things right. This included learning the steps to routines in ballet class, painstakingly creating arts projects, insisting that nursery rhymes and songs be sung correctly and choosing her own dresses and socks, in which she always liked to "sit like a lady."
Alice also enjoyed going to the movies, playing with her many friends, coloring and painting. Among her favorite cartoons were "The Rugrats" and "Winnie the Pooh and Friends."
"She made friends at the hospital as easily as she did at ballet class and was always ready to enjoy a good joke or make a quick comment," recalls family friend Sheila Ioannou, whose daughter knew Alice from the Saratoga Parent Nursery School.
Beverley Nakashima, one of Alice's teachers, has similar happy memories. "I will always remember Alice's spunky attitude that made me smile and giggle inside. I loved to listen to her voice and clear articulation as she introduced her cuddly stuffed animal friends at Share Time," she says.
Alice even inspired other children, such as her friend and classmate Rachel Juliano, who was overheard saying to her mother: "I love Alice, and I miss her. She's alive in my heart, and I talk to her."
Survivors include parents Adam and Suzanne Carter of Saratoga and older sister, Sarah-Jane Carter.
Memorial services have been held. A memorial garden of purple and pink flowers--Alice's favorite colors--has also been planted by her classmates at the nursery school.
