    Docents, donors sought at Hakone

The Hakone Foundation is looking for a few good men and women to serve as volunteer docents at Hakone Gardens' Cultural Exchange Center, which is open on weekends when the center is not in use by organized groups or classes.

The center's exhibitions change every few months, so donations or loans of private Asian art or craft collections are always welcome. Racks for the center's kimono collection are also needed.

Hakone Gardens is at 21000 Big Basin Way in Saratoga. Call Helen Metcalf at 408.867.9349 or Lillian Morgan at 408.867.2661 for additional information.

    Southwest YMCA honors diversity

The Southwest YMCA, 13500 Quito Road in Saratoga, invites all members of the community--YMCA members or not--to attend a diversity celebration on Aug. 25 from 5 to 8 p.m.

The event includes authentic Mexican cooking, French crêpes, Native American arts and crafts demonstrations, a display of wares from Third World countries and cultural and historical tales spun by storytellers. Those attending are welcome to dress in international attire. For more information, call 408.370.1877.

    Special Olympics seeks volunteers

The Silicon Valley Region of the Special Olympics Northern California Chapter is looking for patient, good-humored volunteers to serve as coaches for the organization's busy fall season.

No prior sports experience is necessary, although volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
