The hike, open to all ages, begins at the YSI's Nature Center, at 16055 Sanborn Road. Lead by Nature Center manager Patricia Kucker, the hike takes participants through the evening woods and teaches them to use their senses in identifying nocturnal animals. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $5 per person.

The nonprofit YSI provides science education classes, hikes and day camps to develop children's appreciation for the natural world. Call 408.867.6940 or 408.356.4945 for reservations.

    Hakone Gardens plans art classes

Saratoga's Hakone Gardens, at 21000 Big Basin Way, offers a pair of classes on the fundamentals of drawing on Aug. 19 and 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Professional international painter Ferenc Besze will teach basic techniques that enable new or continuing artists to sketch with confidence. He will emphasize the importance of perspective, composition and design.

Participants should bring their own 11-by-14-inch drawing pad, a viewfinder, 2B, 4B and 6B pencils, an eraser and an easel, or portable chair. The classes include a lecture and sketching on-location. Cost is $40 for one day, or $70 for both days. For more information, call Besze at 650.960.1722.

Next is a visit to the Smith & Hook/Hahn Estates Winery, which includes a picnic lunch, wine tasting and a vineyard ward. On the return trip, the bus will stop at The Farm Vegetable produce stand.

Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Adults of all ages are welcome. Cost is $64 per person. Space is limited. Call 408.868.1248 or 408.868.1249 for reservations.
