    Congregation hosts an event for new members

    Congregation Beth David, 19700 Prospect Road in Saratoga, will host a welcoming Shabbat for new and prospective members on Aug. 13 at 8 p.m.

    Along with meeting their fellow congregants, those attending will also have the chance to visit with members of the Beth David board of trustees.

    Saratoga artist gives a demo in Los Gatos

    Saratoga resident Yoju, a prolific artist and a member of Saratoga's Aegis Gallery, will give a free demonstration on Aug. 14 at 1 p.m. in the community room of the First United Methodist Church of Los Gatos, at 19 High School Court. The presentation is sponsored by the Los Gatos Art Association. Artists and art fans alike are welcome to attend.

    Yoju will demonstrate suminagashi, an ancient Japanese marbling technique using water and paints. Yoju's style uses traditional methods and modern materials.

    There will also be opportunities for those attending to try a little suminagashi for themselves. For more information, call 446-4178.

    Rec. Dept. plans day trip to Napa for tours, lunch

    The Saratoga Recreation Department offers an all-day bus trip to the Napa Valley on Sept. 16.

    The day begins with a guided tour of the teaching kitchens at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, a landmark in the town of St. Helena, which housed the Christian Brothers Winery for more than a century. A lunch at the Greystone restaurant follows the tour. Afterwards, participants will visit Hurd's Candle Factory.

    The trip lasts from approximately 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and costs $74 per person. Adults of all ages are welcome. Space is limited; early reservations are recommended. For more information, call 868-1248.
