Saratoga NewsCouncil race hopefuls take out papers, take time filingBy Sarah Lombardo Potential candidates appear to be waiting until the last minute to officially toss their hats into the ring for Saratoga City Council elections in November. Up for grabs are three seats on the council. Aug. 12 is the final day for non-incumbents to apply for the council race. Potential candidates must turn their candidate packets in to city clerk Betsy Cory by 5 p.m. The first deadline of Aug. 7 was extended because Mayor Don Wolfe and councilmember Paul Jacobs, who both joined the council in 1994, did not file to run for re-election. As of press time Aug. 10, no one had filed candidacy papers with Cory. But, according to Cory, eight people requested council packets, including former mayor and current councilmember Gillian Moran, who also joined the council in 1994. The filing period opened July 13. Saratoga residents Marcia Fariss, Evan Baker, Erna Jackman, Jim MacMorren and David Silverglide are among those interested enough to have taken out papers. In addition, Finance Commissioner Nick Streit and Planning Commissioner Henry Murakami have also requested candidacy packets. Both Streit and Murakami still have time left on their respective commissions: Streit's term runs through October 2001; Murakami's, until April 1999. Murakami said he considered running for council because he believes he has reached a point where he is qualified for the position and would have something to contribute. "I think that I have enough experience here and that I could do a good job," he said. "It's not that I have an agenda."
