Locals among leaders in pair of triathlons

By Dick Sparrer

Scott Adams of Los Gatos was running with the leaders in the San Jose International Triathlon VI.

Well, that's not exactly true. Adams was running, swimming and biking with the leaders in the grueling event at San Jose's Lake Almaden.

The competition began with a one-kilometer swim. Athletes climbed out of the water to begin a 40K bike ride, and finishing up with a 10K run.

And Adams covered the course well enough to finish among the top 15 pro and elite competitors. Adams finished 13th overall in 2:00:43.

Marci Mauro of Sunnyvale and Lauren Alexander of San Jose were top finishers in the women's elite class. Mauro was fourth in 2:02:53 with Alexander fifth in 2:03:29.

Jackie McCleary of Los Gatos and Brian Lavelle, Thomas Carney, Bill Shawhan, Tim Lavelle and Eileen Navarrete of San Jose were among the individual winners in age group competition at the rugged event.

B. Lavelle was first in the men's 20-24 division, and Carney took the 30-34 title. Shawhan roared to a win in the men's 45-49 age group, and T. Lavelle took the 50-54 title. Neal was an easy winner in the men's 60-64 division.

Justin Moore of Saratoga was 19th in the tough men's 25-29 division.

Navarrete and McCleary were each winners in female competition.

Navarrete won the 14-and-under title, and McCleary was first in the 30-34 division.

A day earlier, in the San Jose Mountain Bike Sprint Triathlon at Lake Almaden, Eric Bean of Sunnyvale raced to an overall victory. Bean, 22, breezed through the 500-yard swim, 10-mile bike ride and three-mile run in 54:02 to finish almost two and a half minutes of his nearest rival.

Kevin Bowe of Saratoga, a 17-year-old who attends Mitty High School, came through with a surprising ninth overall in 1:00.34. Bowe was competing in his first triathlon.

Emily Allison of San Jose was 34th overall and the second female finisher in the fast field.

In age group competition, Pearce Selleck of Los Gatos was first in the male 14-and-under division, and Bowe won the 15-19 division. Bean took the 20-24 class, and Clevenger was second in the 30-34 age division. Archie King of San Jose was second in the men's 40-44 division, and Tony Grant of San Jose was second in the 45-49 division.

Ed Carpentier of San Jose was first in the 50-54 division; Frank O'Sullivan of San Jose was second in the 55-59 class; James Cochrane of Saratoga was fifth in the 60-64 group; and Wally Saunders of San Jose was first in the 65-69 division.

Allison was second overall among the women, but first in the 20-24 age division. Rachel Rhodes of San Jose was the 14-and-under winner, and Gayle Mamlok of San Jose took the 15-19 title.

Michelle Jenkins of Sunnyvale was second in the women's 25-29 age group, with Susan Ghest of Saratoga 18th.
