The Saratoga News earned first-place recognition for best cartoon in the 1995 California Newspaper Publishers Association Better Newspapers Contest.
Steven DeCinzo's cartoon, which ran on March 1, 1995, satirized the high rate of disability claims among sheriff's deputies.
The Los Gatos Weekly-Times, a sister paper, took three first-place awards: for newspaper design, editorial pages and editorial cartoon.
Other awards for Metro Newspapers' area publications included: Metro, first place for an editorial cartoon by DeCinzo and second place for writing; and Metro Santa Cruz, second place for feature story and first place for investigative or enterprise reporting.
