Hakone Gardens history program

Historian and columnist Willys Peck will show slides and talk about the early history of Hakone Gardens on Aug. 15 at 7:30 p.m., during an annual meeting of the board of trustees at the Hakone Gardens Cultural Exchange Center, 21000 Big Basin Way.

Jacqueline Stine, granddaughter of the original developer of the gardens, has lent her family scrapbooks and allowed photographs to be reproduced.

These old photographs have inspired Helen Metcalf and the Pecks to instigate a revival of a performance of the opera Madame Butterfly in the gardens. Planning, chaired by Margaret Slemmons, is in progress for an event next May.
