Lloyd C. Marks
Lloyd C. Marks, 79, a longtime resident of Saratoga, died July 19 of cardiac illness while a patient in the Veterans Skilled Nursing Facility in Menlo Park.
Born Oct. 30, 1916, in Richland County, Ohio, Marks entered the service on Oct. 31, 1941, and was a B-17 pilot with the 100th Bomb Group, Squadron 350, based at Thorpe Abbot, England.
On Jan. 29, 1944, his plane crashed, leaving him severely burned and disabled. For his service to his country, he was awarded the distinguished Purple Heart and an Air Medal. He remained a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 11.
Overcoming his disabilities, he opened a machine shop in Chico in 1948 and then moved with his family to Mountain View in 1953 to take a job as a welding supervisor with Pittsburg Des Moines Steel Co.
He built a house in Saratoga and moved here in 1956. At that time, he worked as an engineer for IBM Corp. and later for Beckman Instruments. Since 1972, he had been in real estate, first as a salesman and then as a broker, opening his own office, Marks Properties. Because of his failing health, the real estate office was closed in 1985.
Marks was laid to rest at Madronia Cemetery in Saratoga on July 25. He is survived by his wife, Ina May; a son, Allen Marks; two daughters, Diane Marks and Sharryn Bostic; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a sister, Carol Jeanette of Cottonwood, Ariz. A military service with honors was held at the grave site. A chaplain from Onizuka Air Force Base performed the service, followed by a seven-gun salute.
The family has requested that donations be made in Lloyd Marks' name to the Valley Medical Foundation Burn Center, 828 S. Bascom Ave. #170, San Jose, 95128.
