    Knight Ridder gifts Montalvo

Media giant Knight Ridder recently pledged $500,000 to Montalvo for its planned artists' colony. The gift followed closely on the heals of an announcement in the last week of July that the state of California had set aside $300,000 for the artists' project.

"It's gratifying to see that both Knight Ridder and the state of California understand that, like a new museum or a new symphony hall, this new research and development center for artists is essential cultural infrastructure," said Bill Murphy, Montalvo board president, in a recently released statement.

Currently under construction, the artists' colony will provide living and working space for 10 emerging artists from every genre in the creative spectrum. The $9 million projected is scheduled to be completed in fall 2002.

    Local dentist dies in crash

Dr. Susan M. Booth, 44, who ran her own dentistry practice on Cox Avenue, died on Sunday, Aug. 5, from injuries sustained in a plane crash that day.

Booth was in a private plane piloted by her father, Dr. Mark Sjjadi, Aug. 5, along with her husband and son, when the plane struck a group of trees during takeoff in Weaverville. Booth and her family had been in the Redding area for her mother-in-law's birthday celebration.

Booth's father was reportedly injured in the crash and taken to San Jose for surgery. The extent of his injuries was not known as of Aug. 9. Booth's son Mark and husband, Steve Funderburg, were reportedly not injured in the crash. Services were to be held Friday, Aug. 10, at Montalvo's Spanish Courtyard.

Several seats open on city boards

Any Saratoga citizen is eligible for a seat on the commissions. After an interview process, the city council appoints qualified candidates.

Meanwhile, the citizen oversight committee charged with watching funds for the Saratoga Community Library renovation also has a vacancy.
