Observer Corps meeting planned
The League of Women Voters of Los Gatos-Saratoga-Monte Sereno invites anyone interested in observing local politics to join its Observer Corps. Prospective members can attend the group's organizational meeting Aug. 23 at 2 p.m. in the lounge of the Saratoga Community Center at 19655 Allendale Ave.
The Observer Corps "observes" city and town councils in action by attending council meetings in Saratoga, Los Gatos and Monte Sereno. The group has just added a new city, Campbell, which also needs observers.
For more information about the League of Women Voters or the Observer Corps, call Barbara at 408.395.4397.
Lions Club to hold membership party
The Saratoga Lions Club will host a prospective membership party on Aug. 18 in the late afternoon at the home of Lions George and Marge Bunyard. All adults in the community are welcome to attend, meet some Lions officers and learn more about the service club.
The Saratoga Lions main focus is on sight- and hearing-related projects. Members also participate in many volunteer activities that help the community as well as individual people in need.
To RSVP, call membership vice president Shirley Cancellieri at 408.741.5586.
Photographer to talk on orangutans
As part of its ongoing series of community programs, REI Saratoga has invited professional photographer and writer Christine Krieg to give a slide show of her travels through the rainforests of Borneo in her search for orangutans, an endangered species.
Among the places Krieg has traveled is Tanjung Putting National Park on the south coast of Central Kalimantan, one of only two remaining areas where this ruddy ape can be found in the wild. Krieg will also talk about how to help the Indonesian park service protect the orangutan and how to prepare for travel and living in Borneo.
REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. There is no charge to attend this event; all ages are welcome. Call 408.871.8765 for more information.
