High schools improve facilities

    Local students make dean's lists

    Several local residents have been named to the dean's list at Columbia University in New York.

    In order to receive this academic honor, students must earn a 3.33 GPA or higher during the spring semester.

    Those honored are: Rajesh Das of Saratoga, who is an undergraduate at the school of Engineering and Applied Science, Rani Bose and Peter Kujawski, both Saratoga residents. Sacha Kang of Los Gatos was also recognized.

    Saratoga resident Lauren Siegle was named to the dean's list at Boston University for her accomplishments during the spring semester.

    Saratoga resident inducted into NSCS

    The National Society of Collegiate Scholars inducted Saratoga resident Michael Goss as a member. He will be honored during a campus ceremony this fall at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo.

    The NSCS us a highly selective, national, nonprofit honors organization that recognizes first and second year undergraduate students who excel academically.

    School district offers free and low-priced lunches

    The Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District announced its new policy on providing free and reduced-price lunch meals to students on July 28.

    The criteria for free meals range from having an annual income of $10,855 in a household comprised of one person, to a household of eight with an annual combined income of $37,245.

    The criteria for reduced-price meals range from a household of one with an annual income of $15,448 to a household of eight with an annual income of $53,003.

    Students, who are members of food stamp households, California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids assistance units, or receive benefits from the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations, are automatically eligible regardless of the income of the household in which they live. Eligibility for a foster child is based on the child's income.

    Saratogan in study abroad program in Florence, Italy

    Saratoga resident Matthew Shoor spent the 1999-2000 academic year studying in the Middlebury School in Florence, Italy, as part of Middlebury College's study abroad program.

    In the fall, Shoor will begin his senior year at Middlebury College in Vermont.

    High School grad awarded Tall Club Scholarship Andrew Bosworth, a 2000 graduate of SHS, received the Tall Club of Silicon Valley's 2000 scholarship for $500.

    Applicants must meet academic and achievement requirements, as well as a height requirement--men must be at least six feet, two inches tall and women must be at least five feet, 10 inches tall. Bosworth stands at six feet three inches tall. He plans to attend Harvard University in the fall.
