LWV selects new officers for year

The new officers for the Los Gatos, Saratoga and Monte Sereno League of Women Voters for 2000-2001 are: Marge Bunyard, president; Margaret Bard, vice president of programs; Sue Boyd, vice president of membership; Helga Ruby, administration; Barbara Mendenhall, secretary; and Dale Hill, treasurer.

The mission of the league, which is a nonpartisan political organization, is to encourage informed and active participation of citizens in government, to work to increase the understanding of public policy issues and to influence public policy through education and advocacy.

Oversight group is formed for a new fire station

A four-member citizen's oversight committee has been formed to monitor the spending of Measure F funds.

In April, voters passed Measure F, a $6 million bond measure that will pay for a new fire station at the current station's location on the corner of Saratoga Avenue and Saratoga-Los Gatos Road. The committee members are Frank Lemmon, former Saratoga public safety commissioner; Jay Geddes, a Saratoga fire commissioner; Hugh Hexamer, a public safety commissioner; and Saratoga citizen Don Whetstone.

SFD Chief Ernest Kraule said the district is pleased to have four prominent members of the community to ensure the fire station's development goes smoothly.

The committee will meet monthly to review the progress of the new facility and monitor the expenditure of the bond measure.

Kraule said the committee meetings would be public.

Architects are working on the design of the facility and over the next few months, a final plan will be available for the public to review. Also, plans are almost complete for the remodeling of the vacant building in back of the fire station, which will be used to house the firefighters temporarily when the new station is under construction. The fire district estimates the remodel will be completed in early 2001, so that the current station can be demolished.
