    Seat on library commission open

The City Council of Saratoga is seeking interested applicants to fill an unscheduled vacancy on the Library Commission for the unexpired term, which runs through October 2002.

The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Aug. 20. Applicants must attend a commission meeting before they will be interviewed by the City Council. The next Library Commission meeting is scheduled for Aug. 25. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for Sept. 1.

The commission meets the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. to consider matters concerning Saratoga's Community Library system. The commission advises the council regarding these subjects.

Residents of Saratoga, 18 years or older, may obtain an application from City Hall, 13777 Fruitvale Ave., during business hours. For information, contact City Clerk Susan Ramos at 868-1269

    Teen center set to open

The Warner Hutton House is ready to open for another year of service to the city's teenagers. Its doors will swing open on Aug. 30, and there is no charge for students living in Saratoga, regardless which school they attend or which district they are in.

This fall, the house will be open daily after school until 5:30 p.m.

But using the house doesn't come free to the city's Youth Commission, which is asking for donations. This year, the commission is hoping to raise $15,000 of its $45,000 annual operating costs.

Call recreation coordinator Greg Milano for information about the Youth Commission's fundraising drive, at 868-1272.

    Supervisor returns from Kosovo visit

Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian has returned from a two-week tour of Albania and war-ravaged Kosovo, where he spent time volunteering with the countries' ongoing refugee crisis. He helped establish the International Rescue Committee's tool distribution program for repairing buildings and also helped the IRC reorganize its field operations. Simitian spent time in the cities of Pizren and Pristina, Kosovo, and also in Tirana, Albania.

The IRC is volunteer-run and was founded in 1933.
