Mountain climber and sailor speaks of his adventures

As part of its series of community lectures and programs, REI Saratoga hosts mountaineer Jim Whittaker on Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. for a slide presentation on his mountain-climbing adventures around the world and his current endeavor--circumnavigating the globe with his family aboard a 55-foot ketch.

After his presentation, Whittaker, who in 1963 became the first American to reach the summit of Mt. Everest, will be on hand to sign his autobiography, A Life on the Edge. The program is free, and everyone is welcome. REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. For more information, call 871-8765.

Local symphony announces youth string competition

The Sunnyvale-based Nova Vista Symphony Association is holding its 13th annual Concerto Competition for Strings. All young people ages 22 and younger who play violin, viola or cello are invited to enter. First prize is $250 and a solo number in the Nova Vista Symphony Orchestra's Jan. 15 concert. Second prize is $100.

Applicants should prepare a full-length work for string solo with orchestra, which they will perform for a three-judge panel on Nov. 13. Applicants should supply their own accompanists. The NVSO, now entering its 34th season, is partially sponsored by the Arts Council of Silicon Valley and the Sunnyvale Parks and Recreation department.

For more information, or to obtain applications, which must be turned in by Nov. 1, call 245-3116 or email NovaVista@juno.com.
