Saratoga NewsOn CampusHosts are needed for exchange students AYUSA International is seeking families to host Brazilian exchange students this fall. The Brazilian students will spend a semester or academic year living with a host family while attending local high schools. Host families will learn firsthand about Brazilian culture while sharing American culture with the exchange student. For more information, contact regional manager Mary Neisingh at 1-800-537-7365. Lynbrook students win at mock trial Four Lynbrook High School students received special certificates of achievement for winning the 1998 County Mock Trial Championships. Saratoga residents Amica and Julie Cohn, Jasvider Khaira and Heather Lamb--all members of the LHS mock trial team--defeated 20 other Santa Clara County teams to take top honors. Superintendent of Schools Colleen Wilcox said the win was an "impressive upset" because the team defeated both Palo Alto High School and Lincoln High School; teams from one of these two schools had won the competition every year since 1991. Lynbrook's history teacher David Pugh and local attorneys Mark Shern and Ian Kass coached the students in the competition. The event is co-sponsored by the Santa Clara Office of Education and the Santa Clara County Bar Association. Saratogan awarded an Auxiliary scholarship David Min Kim from Saratoga High School recently received a $2,000 scholarship from the Auxiliary of Community Hospital of Los Gatos. The auxiliary awarded a total of six $2,000 scholarships to students, such as Kim, who are majoring in the medical field. Free lunch program offered at LG-SJHSD The Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District announced it is participating in the free and reduced-price meal program under the National School Lunch Program. Saratoga High School has a copy of the program policy for review. Those interested can pick up a free-lunch application in the principal's office or use the application form recently sent to residences by the district office. The completed applications can be submitted anytime during the year and must be returned to SHS, Herriman Avenue and Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road.
