Post office opens a new line for customer-service

The Saratoga Post Office announced last week that residents who call their local post office will now be directed to new customer-service representatives--in Denver.

Under the United States Post Offices' new customer-service plan, residents calling the Saratoga Post Office will hear a recorded message with a new toll-free phone number--1-800-ASK-USPS--for the Postal Service's National Service Center in Denver. The USPS said that by November, customers from 142 post offices throughout most of San Jose, Fresno and Bakersfield should be using this new number. Customer-service representatives in Denver will be able to handle questions about ZIP codes and addresses, mailing rates and requirements, hours of operation, product information, change of address information, redelivery notices and requests to hold mail. Representatives will answer the phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

District committee announces meeting

The Santa Clara County Committee on School District Organization has announced that its Aug. 27 meeting will be held at Monta Vista High School in Cupertino, starting at 6 p.m. The committee plans to discuss fewer and more specific scenarios at the meeting, according to Larry Shirey, senior research analyst for the Santa Clara County Office of Education.

Commission on fall lineup

The Saratoga Planning Commission has moved closer to going on the air. The commission discussed a proposal to begin airing its meetings on KSAR-TV (Channel 6), Saratoga's community access channel, with the City Council last week. Commissioners expressed concern that residents tuning into the meeting might not be able to see everything that is going on. They pointed out that whereas the council handles most of its issues through discussion only, the commissioners often scrutinize maps and architectural designs. Interim City Manager Larry Perlin said that the problem is a technical one that can most likely be handled by KSAR, and said he expects the commission could be on the air probably as soon as this fall.
