Santa Clara Valley YWCA seeks volunteers

The Rape Crisis Center of the YWCA of Santa Clara Valley needs compassionate volunteers to help staff its 24-hour crisis line for victims of rape and sexual assaults. Volunteers must complete a 40-hour state-certified training course, which begins Sept. 13. Crisis-line staffers offer counseling and emotional support for assault victims as well as family members and significant others.

The YWCA also needs volunteers for its teen empowerment and child-abuse prevention programs, whose training course begins Sept. 8. These volunteers work in the schools to teach children, teens and adults about child abuse, sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence and date rape. Artists hold meeting, pastel demonstration

The Saratoga Contemporary Artists (SCA) are holding a meeting--open to the public--Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Saratoga Public Library, located at 13650 Saratoga Ave. At the meeting, local artist Patricia Suggs will offer a demonstration of her pastel drawing techniques. Suggs, whose styles include classical realism and American Impressionism, has many exhibitions under her belt.

SCA is a community organization that promotes the arts and lets artists of different levels and styles socialize, network and review each others' works. The annual membership fee for exhibiting members is $15, along with a one-time $5 initiation fee. Honorary members pay no dues. For information, call Ann Marie at 354-9046.

Gallery Saratoga hosts annual garden party

On Aug. 24 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Gallery Saratoga hosts its third annual garden party, which is open to the public. The party, which takes place in a private garden at 20215 Blauer Drive, features original artworks by members of the gallery as well as special guest artists. There will also be live music and refreshments. Admission is free. For more information, call the gallery at 867-0458. The gallery is located at 14531 Big Basin Way.
