Saratogan is summer baseball intern

Emily Mosier is a summer intern for the Memphis Chicks baseball team in Memphis, Tenn. The Chicks are a double-A farm team of the San Diego Padres.

Emily is the daughter of Clyde and Lillian Mosier of Saratoga. She is a 1993 graduate of Saratoga High School and is a senior at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss., where she is majoring in sociology.

Saragogans are among SJSU presidents scholars

Two Saratogans are among 138 San Jose State University students honored as President's Scholars for their 4.0 grade-point average.

The local students honored are Leslie Davis, who is majoring in occupational therapy, and Noa Doitel, who is studying psychology.

Liu takes part in honor program

Anthony Liu, a student of Monta Vista High School, took part in Presidential Classroom's 1996 Flagship Program in Washington, D.C. Anthony joined more than 300 high-school juniors and seniors from 42 states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Germany, Canada, Switzerland and Hong Kong. The students spent the week meeting government leaders and learning about the democratic process.

Highlights for the week included seminars led by Attorney General Janet Reno and Director of Central Intelligence John Deutch. The students attended seminars at CIA Headquarters, the Department of Agriculture and State, the floor of the House of Representatives, and visited foreign embassies.

Presidential Classrooms is a nonprofit, nonpartisan civic education organization celebrating its 27th year.

Saratogans appointed to dean's list

Saratogans Kathryn Ann Fireman, a junior psychology major, and Jonathan Avery Grose, a freshman business administration major, were appointed to the dean's list at University of Oregon.

Petersen-Crair starts 4th year in medical school

Pamela Petersen-Crair, daughter of Howard and Gloria Petersen of Saratoga and a 1984 graduate of Saratoga High School, is a fourth-year medical student at UC-San Francisco.

She has been installed as the medical student member of the American Medical Association Board of Trustees and will assist in developing of policy and standards for medicine while fulfilling her term on the board.

Northrup graduates summa cum laude

Shannon Northrup, daughter of Craig and Martha Northrup of Saratoga, recently graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from UC-San Diego.

She majored in economics, urban studies and planning, and minored in environmental studies. She is a graduate of Saratoga High School.

Becker elected to drug awareness board

Chris Becker, a computer science major at California Polytechnic State University, was recently selected to serve on the board of directors for San Luis Obispo County's High School Drug and Alcohol Awareness/Alternative Program. He continues to be a regular volunteer for that program as well. Becker is a 1993 graduate of Saratoga High School and son of Fred and Judi Becker of Saratoga.

East graduates from school for the arts

Erin East, daughter of Pam and John East of Saratoga, graduated June 1 from the Idyllwild Arts Academy, a college prep school for the arts. A dance major at the academy, she has been featured in solo roles in such ballets as Coppelia, Don Quixote and Giselle.

Prior to attending Idyllwild, she attended Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where she was salutatorian of her graduating class.

East was the recipient of an honorable mention award in jazz dance from the National Foundation for the Advancement in the Arts.

She has been accepted as one of 20 freshmen into the dance department at the Juilliard School in New York City. She will begin their four-year college dance program in the fall with the hopes of continuing a career in dance after finishing her studies.

Maloney graduates from Notre Dame

Peter Maloney, a 1992 graduate of Lynbrook High School, was awarded a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame on May 19.

Maloney, the son of Chip and Weedgie Maloney, was also named to the dean's list for outstanding scholarship during the spring semester. As an undergraduate, he majored in accounting.
