Teacher experiences 18th-century America
Jean Nelson, who teaches fifth grade at Foothill Elementary School, completed an intensive week-long workshop at the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute in Early American History, in Williamsburg, Va.
The workshop was designed to assist teachers in making history exciting for students and helping students meet national and state history standards.
Teachers learned about colonial history, from the first English settlement at Jamestown to the American Revolution. They re-enacted 18th-century events and met historians and interpreters who portrayed historical figures such as Thomas Jefferson. Teachers also shared strategies to improve instruction, literacy and historical thinking.
After the workshop, participants must train other teachers and develop lesson plans to share with them.
Nelson has taught at Foothill for a year. Previously, she taught at Oak Grove Elementary School in Albany, Ore. Nelson earned a bachelor's degree in recreation management and youth leadership from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and a master's degree in teaching from Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore.
