    Recycling to become easier

Due to new emergency regulations adopted by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, it will become easier for the public to recycle old televisions, computer monitors and other electronic equipment.

According to the state, a typical 17-inch computer monitor can harbor more than 2 pounds of lead.

The new regulations no longer classify cathode ray tubes found in the monitors and televisions as "universal waste," which means they can no longer be put in the trash and taken to landfills.

The state mandate is part of a national effort to better track and dispose of "e-waste." In the near future, the state hopes to have electronics manufacturers handling the recycling and reuse of cathode ray tubes.

For now local waste management companies will be coordinating the disposal of old electronic devices.

To find recycling centers in the area, log onto www.ciwmb.ca.gov/links/ or call Green Valley Disposal at 408.354.2100.

The Saratoga Senior Center will hold its second annual auction and dinner on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 4 to 9 p.m. At the entrance, a giant mock ship, dubbed the S.S. Saratoga, will greet those attending the nautical-themed event.

Other live and silent auction items include art, antiques, dinners and weekend getaways. Bill Anders of Factory Direct Carpets will provide entertainment.

Tickets for the event are $30 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. A chance at the cruise costs $25 and is available now.
