CNPA honors the Saratoga News with General Excellence award

In the newspaper business, reporters are supposed to stay behind the scenes. And we at the Saratoga News heartily endorse that journalistic principle. So why is our staff so unabashedly mugging the camera? It's because the Saratoga News has been honored by the California Newspaper Publishers Association as a newspaper of General Excellence.

Judges singled out the newspaper as the best weekly of its size in the state. We figure that makes the Saratoga News the best little newspaper in California. And, frankly, we're proud.

The presentation was made during ceremonies at the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego on Aug. 12, where the organization met for its annual convention. Executive Editor Dan Pulcrano accepted the award.

The Saratoga News' sister publications in the Silicon Valley Community Newspapers group did well by CNPA as well.

The Los Gatos Weekly-Times received a first place for Public Service in 11,000 to 25,000 circulation for its ongoing campaign to put comprehensive senior services in Los Gatos under one roof.

The editorial staff of the Saratoga News: Dale Bryant (front), editor; (on stairs from left) Kathy De La Torre, photographer; Sandy Sims, reporter; Kara Chalmers, assistant editor; Leigh Ann Maze, reporter; Tony Tomeo, gardening columnist; Shari Kaplan, feature editor; Steven DeCinzo, cartoonist; Rita Baum, senior section columnist; Carl Heintze, Point of View columnist; and Mary Ann Cook, Saratoga Sampler columnist. Missing: Willys Peck, Saratoga Stereopticon columnist, and Dick Sparrer, sports editor.

Our newest paper, the Campbell Reporter received a first place for Page Layout and Design; the Sunnyvale Sun took a second for Best Feature Story; and the Cupertino Courier won first place for Best Local Spot News.

In the Metro Newspapers group, former Saratoga News photographer George Sakkestad took a first place for Photo Essay for his powerful photographic documentation of a cancer patient's last days which ran in Metro Santa Cruz.

A second place also went to Metro Santa Cruz for Special Issue. Metro received a first place for Business or Financial Story, and Metro's classified section won first place in the Classified Advertising category.

As for the Saratoga News recognition, we on the editorial staff would be the first to say that without our advertisers, we'd be nowhere. And without our informed and passionate readers, who make our Speak Out pages some of the liveliest reading anywhere, we wouldn't be Number One.
