Cunneen wins tech award
For the fifth year running, District 24 assemblyman Jim Cunneen has received the American Electronic Association's (AEA) Legislator of the Year award. He will also be the first legislator to be honored with AEA's new Lifetime Achievement award.
The AEA gave Cunneen the award based on his leadership on a number of different technological fronts. Cunneen authored laws such as the 1998 Internet tax moratorium, bans on sending spam, tax exemptions for employers providing tuition assistance and tax credits for research and development.
One open seat on county commission
Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian is inviting interested citizens to apply for an open seat on the county planning commission. Simitian will select and nominate an applicant to the county board of supervisors.
The commission influences county land use policy and works to solve regional and neighborhood development problems. The commission advises the supervisors on ordinance amendments dealing with land development and subdivision matters, including zoning changes. The commission has the power to grant or deny use permits and administers the county's planning laws for land use and development in unincorporated areas.
The position requires attendance at the commission's monthly meetings, residency in the county and an interest in land use and development.

Saratogan goes to D.C. for MADD
Saratoga High School student Benjamin Bennett Morse, 16, was selected to go to Washington D.C. as a youth delegate to the Mothers Against Drunk Driving National Youth Summit to Prevent Underage Drinking 2000 from Sept. 29 to Oct. 4. During the summit, youth delegates will explore the issues surrounding alcohol and underage drinking, and come up with possible solutions.
Morse was selected based on his commitment to addressing the problem of underage drinking.
