    Lip-reading classes come to Saratoga

    A series of lip-reading (speechreading) classes, sponsored by West Valley College in Saratoga, will begin on Aug. 21 at the Saratoga Senior Center, 19655 Allendale Ave. Classes are also being formed at the Jewish Community Center in Los Gatos. Beginning, intermediate and advanced classes are available; classes meet weekly, on Mondays and Tuesdays. The instructor is Marcia Fariss, a West Valley instructor and certified audiologist.     Gallery Saratoga sets garden party

    Gallery Saratoga, an artists' cooperative at 14531 Big Basin Way, hosts its sixth annual garden party on Aug. 27 from noon to 5 p.m. at a private residence in Saratoga. Original artwork from gallery members will be on display and for sale, and guest artists will be in attendance. There is no charge to attend. For directions, call 408.867.0458.

    Hakone Gardens plans art classes

    As part of the art classes it offers to the community, Saratoga's Hakone Gardens, at 21000 Big Basin Way, offers a pair of classes on watercolor painting on Aug. 26 and 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The instructor, award-winning international artist Ferenc Besze, will show participants how to add figures to their paintings and how to improve composition and design.

    Participants should bring watercolor paints, an easel, reference materials such as photographs or sketches, and a bag lunch. For more information, call Besze at 650.960.1722 or Hakone Gardens at 408.741.4994.

    Salvation Army program begins

    The Salvation Army has started its annual back-to-school supply program for needy students in Santa Clara County. Its goal is to provide approximately 1,400 children with binders, pens, pencils, paper and other necessities for the school year. Each eligible family will also receive one bag of food. Monetary donations, or donations of new school supplies are needed. Call James Curry at 408.282.1165 ext. 218.
