William Walker

Former Saratoga resident William Walker died July 5 at the age of 69.

Born on March 5, 1929, in Long Beach, Walker moved to Saratoga with his wife, Shirley, in 1969. In his younger years, Walker was a talented athlete at Santa Cruz High School, which enabled him to receive a full scholarship to San Jose State University. There he set new records for the Spartans, which hold to this day. Walker was named to the All-America team in 1953.

The athlete turned down an offer to play professional ball in favor of coaching and teaching. Walker coached and taught physical education at Buchser, Del Mar and Camden high schools and at Foothill and De Anza colleges.

Nine years ago Walker retired to Aptos. His many hobbies included boating, tennis, water skiing, diving and ballroom dancing.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Shirley of Aptos; daughter and son-in-law Cheri and Gary Corbett of Campbell; stepdaughter and son-in-law Kathy Jo and Bret Stern of San Jose; stepson and daughter-in-law Scott and Denice Strawick of Yakima, Wash.; stepson and daughter-in-law David and Maya Strawick of Pleasanton; grandchildren Taylor Corbett, Lucas Stern, Jessica and Amanda Strawick and Kasian and Katrina Strawick; sisters Audrey Kanavel and Leah Coon of San Jose; and stepmother Eileen Walker of San Jose.

A memorial service has been held. Donations may be made to the Spartan Football Scholarship Fund at SJSU.
