Swimmers in Lexington? Just once a year

It's a sight you don't see often--in fact, it's only legal once every year--but there will be swimmers in the waters of Lexington Reservoir this weekend.

The event is the Catfish Swim II, and it's scheduled for the waters of Lexington on Aug. 30. The aquatics adventure is part of the Red Bull Bay Area Open Water Swim Series.

The Catfish Swim will begin at 9 a.m., and swimmers will compete in 1.2- and 2.4-mile events. There will also be a 2.4-mile, two-person relay. Wetsuits are allowed.

The course will run counterclockwise around Lexington and will be marked by large neon buoys. The event will feature a water start and a land finish.

The registration fee is $35 on race day (relay teams add $5). Race day registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

For further information, call 866-8848 or visit their Web site at www.japroductions.com.

The Catfish Swim follows a similar event held earlier this month, when swimmers got their only legal opportunity to dive into the waters of Stevens Creek Reservoir in the Guppy Get-Together II.

Andrew Davies of Saratoga was 16th overall in the wetsuit competition. Tom Davies of Saratoga finished third in the men's 50-59 age group.
