De Anza trek talk scheduled Sept. 16 by Sierra Club
The Guadalupe Regional Group of the Sierra Club's Loma Prieta Chapter will watch slides Sept. 16 of the 1976 reenactment of Juan Bautista de Anza's 1,400-mile trek from Mexico to the San Francisco Presidio and back. The route he and his entourage took, with some variations, has been established by the U.S. National Park Service as the national Historic Anza Trail and is part of Santa Clara County's Trail Master Plan.
This year, there will be another reenactment of de Anza's trek by teams of equestrians, runners and bicyclists, beginning Oct. 11 in Hermosillo, Mexico, and ending at the Presidio Nov. 30. Each day, eight relay teams will cover six miles each.
The Guadalupe Group meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Saratoga Library, Saratoga Avenue at Fruitvale Avenue. For information, call Marj Ottenberg, 867-43576, or local chairman Joe Adamo, 252-6065.
Chamber seeks volunteers for Celebrate Saratoga festivity
The Saratoga Chamber of Commerce is seeking volunteers for the annual Celebrate Saratoga Street Dance on Sept. 28. Volunteers are needed to do everything from helping staff information booths to serving soda. Businesses also are needed to sponsor bands at the event.
In all, more than 300 volunteers are needed, said Kristin Davis, staffing chairwoman.
"This is a popular event and is enjoyed by both young and old," she said.
Contact Davis at 253-2980 or Sheila Arthur, 867-0753.
