Saratoga firefighters mop up after a Saratoga Avenue accident just north of Fruitvale Avenue that injured two people on Aug. 22. According to firefighter Paul Lellman, a man in a BMW sport utility vehicle (right) traveling north on Saratoga Avenue, crossed the median, sheared off a water pipe and rammed a United Parcel Service van (left) waiting to turn left onto Ranfre Lane. The force of the impact buckled the driver's door and floor of the UPS van and trapped the left leg of the driver, a 28-year-old male, for over an hour. Saratoga firefighters eventually pulled him free using the Jaws of Life, an air chisel and a hydraulic prying tool. The driver escaped with cuts to both legs. The BMW's airbags deployed and the driver, a 41-year-old male, suffered head cuts and chest pains.
