    Jessup wins singles at Stead Open

    Michael Jessup was seeded No. 1 in the men's singles division for the recent 2001 Stead $25,000 Open tennis tournament at the Moraga Country Club.

    And the former Saratoga High School star proved the seeding committee knew just what it was doing.

    Jessup won the Stead men's single title with six straight victories, including a 6-4, 6-2 win over Scotty Scott in the finals.

    Jessup took a pair of three-set decisions in the quarterfinals and semi's to get into the title match, then made short work of Scott in straight sets.

    After a first-round bye, the former Falcon opened the tourney with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Raymond Byrum, then beat Robbie Phillips 6-0, 6-3 and Andrew Carlson 6-1, 6-1 to get to the quarterfinals.

    Jessup pulled out a 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 win over Ken Kuperstein, then edged No. 3 seed Jeff Greenwald 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the semi's.

    In men's doubles play, Jessup teamed with Minh Le and pair made it to the semifinals before losing 7-5, 6-4 to Lans Bale and Benjamin Miles.

    Eva Jackson of Saratoga, Tina Cseuz of Los Gatos and Geri Lamble of Saratoga played in the round of 32 in women's singles play.

    Cseuz and Jackson were each members of women's doubles teams that advanced to the quarter's at the Stead.

    Cseuz teamed with Miyako Kubota for a 6-3, 6-2 win over Marlene Cook and Jennifer Shorr, but the two lost a match later 6-0, 6-2 to eventual champs Kim Grant and Abigail Spears.

    Jackson joined with Tiffiny Gillingham for a 6-2, 6-4 win over Carol Akre and Rosie Bareis, but the duo lost 6-3, 6-3 to No. 2 seed Colleen Cheng and Cole.

    Jackson also played in the mixed doubles division.

    Jackson joined with Raymond Byrum of Los Altos, but after a first-round bye, they lost 6-2, 6-2 to Cole and Richard Kepler.

    Tiffiny Gillingham of Saratoga combined with Randy Becker of Mountain View for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win over Courtney and Patrick Nagle in the first round, but they lost a match later to Melissa Gurney and William Behrens.

    Cupertino 3.0

    Perry Lim of Milpitas and Cassandra Richmond-Buccola of Pleasanton were singles winners at the recent Cupertino 3.0 tournament played at the Cupertino Tennis Club.

    Lim took three sets to beat On-King Lau of San Jose 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the men's singles title match, and Richmond-Buccola beat Katie Bartell of Sunnyvale 7-5, 6-4 in the women's singles finals.

    Sam Milioto of San Jose and Robert Brown of Sunnyvale teamed for a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tewel Han of San Jose and James Mei of Milpitas in the men's doubles finals. Milioto and Brown had beaten Don Carloni and Jeff Phillips, both of San Jose, 6-2, 6-2 in the semi's while Han and Mei topped Royal Caswell and Robert Roe, both of Los Gatos, 7-5, 6-4.

    In women's doubles play, Darcy Lopes of Martinez and Patti May of San Ramon whipped Jenny Douglas of San Ramon and Terry Rothfield of Danville 6-4, 6-3 to take the title. Lopes and May had beaten Linda Kim of San Jose and Thu Stankunas of Saratoga 6-2, 6-4 in the semi's while Douglas and Rothfield took care of Sophia Fujioka of Fremont and Melinda Lumpkin of Hayward 3-6, 6-3, 6-0.

    In mixed doubles, Ara Hamamjian of Mountain View and Susan Roberts of Milpitas beat Mitzi Macon of Cupertino and James Martinez of San Jose 6-2, 6-0 in the finals. Hamamjian and Roberts had beaten John Cardoza of Los Altos and Dolly Yang of Saratoga 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals while Macon and Martinez beat Dave Aldrich of San Jose and Myrna Irigon of Mountain View 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
