Mary Ohlfs
Longtime Saratogan Mary Irene Ohlfs died on July 10 at the age of 76.
Ohlfs was born on May 18, 1923, in Oxnard and was a graduate of Mount Saint Mary's College, Los Angeles. At various times in her life, she worked for the Oxnard Recreation Department, Ventura County Social Services and the Girl Scouts of America.
Among the organizations to which Ohlfs belonged were the Mount Saint Mary's College Alumni, the American Association of University Women, Native Daughters of the Golden West, Young Ladies Institute, West Valley Republican Women and a garden club. She was also a member of Sacred Heart Church.
She was predeceased by husband Fabian H. Ohlfs. Survivors include son Jeff Ohlfs of Twentynine Palms; stepsons Ron Ohlfs of Cupertino and Ken Ohlfs of Palmdale; stepdaughter Nancy Blaney of Roseville; eight step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services have been held, with interment at Madronia Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Vujovich Family Institutional Advancement Scholarship at Mount Saint Mary's College, 10 Chester Place, Los Angeles, 90007 or to the Girl Scouts of America in care of Kirby Gillispie, P.O. Box 30187, Santa Barbara, 93130.
Arthur Sylvia
Longtime Saratoga resident Arthur "Art" Sylvia died on July 12 at the age of 58.
Born Feb. 14, 1941, Sylvia joined his mother, Mary, in running the Saratoga School for Dogs in the late 1950s. A dog-lover since childhood, Sylvia was known for always knowing what his canine friends were thinking.
Sylvia worked as an officer with the Morgan Hill Police Department. He became involved with the police as he trained dogs for police use prior to joining the force himself.
After leaving the police force, Sylvia started PSC, a business that leased cars and became a model for other car companies. In 1989, Sylvia and his wife, Kelly, re-opened Saratoga School for Dogs with much success. It later became known as Sylvian Kennel.
Survivors include wife Kelly Sylvia of Saratoga; sons Gennaro and Larry; daughters Kristen and Shannon; and three grandchildren. His family members fondly remember him as a person with "a heart big as apple pie."
A private memorial ceremony will be held on Sept. 12, the day Arthur and Kelly first met on a blind date. Donations can be made to Hospice of the Valley or the American Cancer Society.
Mary Henslee
Mary Pearl Henslee, a resident of Saratoga for the past five years, died on July 26 at the age of 91.
A native of Kelly, Okla., Henslee was a member of the Rebekah Lodge.
She was preceded in death by husband James Henslee, son Gene Henslee and daughter Mary Lou Henslee. Survivors include daughters Letha Matas, Gwen Maule and Joyce R. Stump; sons James D. Henslee and Jerry W. Henslee; 20 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters.
Memorial services have been held.
