Hakone Gardens welcomes public to tea ceremony
In Japan, September--the month in which summer and autumn merge--is considered a mini-season unto itself and is called Zansho. The trustees of the Hakone Foundation invite all interested members of the community to learn more about this season in a tea ceremony on Sept. 4 at Saratoga's Hakone Gardens during three seatings, at 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 p.m.
These public tea ceremonies, called chakai, often revolve around several different themes. The focus of this September's ceremony is tsukimi, or moon-viewing. Along with the moon, rabbits are also part of the tsukimi symbolism, as the Japanese traditionally point out a rabbit in the moon, as opposed to the West's man in the moon. In Japan, Zansho is also a season full of the noise of active insects, and so the symbolism of mushi no koe, or voices of insects, is also common. These different themes are expressed in various ways, such as through the selection of utensils, the design or type of food served and the subject of the scroll hung in the tearoom alcove during the ceremony.
Each participant will receive a bowl of green tea and a traditional tea sweet. A $5 donation per person is requested. Hakone Gardens is at 21000 Big Basin Way. For more information, call 741-4994.
Bike technician offers workshop on maintenance
As part of its ongoing series of community lectures and programs, REI Saratoga hosts Corey Archipley on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. for a Bicycle Maintenance 101 class. An experienced technician and rider, Archipley will demonstrate how to clean and replace a bike chain, adjust derailleurs, replace brake and derailleur cables and fix a flat tire. He'll also offer tips on what to include in an emergency repair toolkit to take on the road.
The program is free and everyone is welcome. REI is in El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. For more information, call 871-8765.
