City Hall phones down last week

Saratoga residents calling City Hall last Thursday probably thought staffers were extremely busy, if the constant busy signal was any indication. But though city employees were on the go, it was in trying to fix the phones, not answer them.

A downed phone line to City Hall kept telephones, faxes, modems--anything requiring travel over the phone lines--quiet last week, and Saratoga residents in the dark because there was no way of telling incoming callers of the problems. One city official said Pacific Bell was trying to remedy the situation, but that no cause had been found yet.

City commissions need volunteers

The Saratoga City Council is looking for residents interested in filling vacancies on the Parks and Recreation Commission, the Planning Commission and the Finance Committee.

The Parks and Recreation Commission consists of seven members and meets on the first Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. It considers issues concerning all aspects of city recreation and parks. Residents with experience or interest in recreation or parks, including those with children who use the parks, are encouraged to apply.

The Planning Commission, which considers matters concerning planning, land use and zoning ordinances, meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. The commission makes legislative decisions and advises the City Council. State law requires disclosure of certain financial interests of planning commissioners.

The Finance Committee meets as needed to advise the City Council on the city budget, audits and other related topics. Residents with experience in finance are encouraged to apply.

Applicants will be invited to attend a meeting of the commission for which they apply and will be interviewed by members of the City Council. Any Saratoga resident age 18 or older may obtain an application form at City Hall, located at 13777 Fruitvale Ave., between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The deadline for submitting applications is Sept. 25. For more information, call the Deputy Clerk at 868-1269.
