WV Welcomers host tea party

The West Valley Welcomers will hold their annual English Tea Party on Thu., Sept.11, at 2 p.m. in the gardens of Faith Schmidt, located at 1994 Mallory Court in Saratoga. Schmidt is current president of the Welcomers Club.

Traditional refreshments include English teas, sandwiches, tea cakes and cookies. Award-winning landscape architect Kathryn Mathewson, owner of Secret Gardens in San Francisco, will be present at the tea party.

West Valley Welcomers members can purchase tickets for $5; guest tickets are $7. Checks for tickets may be sent to Dianne Guisinger at 13143 Via Ranchero Drive, Saratoga, 95070. Reservations are requested by Sept. 5. For more information, contact Guisinger at 867-9570.

Villa Montalvo schedules New Beginnings II

Combining imagery, spoken words and music, stories by Belle Yang come alive in New Beginnings II, a Sept. 5 program at 8 p.m. at Villa Montalvo, located at 15400 Montalvo Road, Saratoga.

A native of Taiwan, Yang has written Baba: A Return to China Upon My Father's Shoulders and The Odyssey of the Manchurian. Excerpts will be read by Ashley Ramsden, complemented by musical compositions by Chen Yi, Michael Touchi and Giacomo Puccini, performed by the San José Chamber Orchestra.

This multimedia performance is a collaboration by Montalvo, the San Jose Center for Poetry & Literature and the San José Chamber Orchestra. Reserved tickets are $22.50. For more information, call 961-5858.

Saratoga Rec Dept. offers dance classes

Saratogans may soon be dancing in the streets, thanks to a selection of classes offered through the Saratoga Recreation Department.

Beginning Sept. 11, participants of all levels can learn international folk dancing from Europe, the Balkans, the Middle East and other locales. No partners are needed.

Country-Western line dancing will be offered in addition to folk and ethnic dancing.
