Residents asked to help update the city traffic plan

The staff of Saratoga's Community Development Department is looking for community input to help shape the direction of the new circulation and scenic highway element of the city's general plan.

The current CSHE was put into use in 1983 and has become outdated. Now, it will be updated to take newer traffic conditions into consideration and will develop goals and policies to address the changes.

To start the effort, a kickoff community workshop will be held on Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. to present objectives and gain input from residents. The meeting will be held at the Saratoga Community Center, located at 19655 Allendale Ave., adjacent to City Hall.

A new Saratoga Recreation guide is available now

The fall 1999 Saratoga Recreation Department activities guide is available now, and the department is offering a number of new classes beginning in mid-September.

New classes this fall include tile mosaic art, dog training, feng shui and Dining with Miss Manners.

In addition to the classes, the department has many trips planned as well. Included this year are outings to San Francisco for Fleet Week; Broadway plays, including Sunset Boulevard; and a visit to the NUMMI auto plant.

For more information on the new guide, call Kim Saxton-Heinrichs at 868-1251.

Library funding is the topic of Sept. 22 meeting

The Saratoga Library Commission will hold a meeting on Sept. 22 to inform its new members, as well as the general public and other city officials, on the complicated subject of library funding policies.

County librarian Susan Fuller will give a presentation about the complex nature of securing funding for the area libraries. In Saratoga, the county-owned library sits on city property.

The meeting will be held at the Saratoga Community Library, and begins at 7:30 p.m.

Books on sale, and on display

The Friends of the Saratoga Library are looking for recent authors to show off at this year's Celebrate Saratoga! event. A display at the street festival will house the "Saratoga Authors Hall of Fame," including a list of books by more than 100 authors who are current or former Saratoga residents.

The exhibit will be held from Sept. 20 through Oct. 3 at the Friends' Book-Go-Round, located at 14410 Oak St.

Authors or anyone who knows an author who wishes to be featured at the exhibit can contact Dolly Barnes at the Saratoga Community Library, at 867-9738.

Additionally, the Friends are gearing up for their Fall Rare Book Auction, and are seeking books that can be donated. Items should be brought to the Book-Go-Round in Saratoga. All donations are tax-deductible and proceeds benefit the Saratoga Library. Call 867-5552 or e-mail BookGoRnd@aol.com for more information.
