Rec. Dept. plans day trip to the S.F. Symphony
Saratoga Recreation Department offers an all-day bus trip to San Francisco on Sept. 22 to attend an open rehearsal of the San Francisco Symphony, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. The day begins with coffee and doughnuts, followed by a guest speaker on symphonic music.
After attending the rehearsal, participants will walk to a hosted lunch at a nearby restaurant, then take a tour of San Francisco's newly renovated City Hall. Comfortable walking shoes should be worn.
The trip lasts from approximately 7:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and costs $74 per person. Adults of all ages are welcome. Space is limited; early reservations are recommended. For more information, call 868-1248.
Rabbi discusses a Zen approach to spirituality
Alan Lew, author and rabbi, will discuss preparations for the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur from the dual perspective of Judaism and Zen Buddhism on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. at Saratoga's Congregation Beth David, 19700 Prospect Road. Lew will share ideas from his new book, One God Clapping: The Spiritual Faith of a Zen Rabbi, and offer spiritual guidelines for the period of atonement that accompanies the Jewish New Year. Mystery writers give talk at the Saratoga Library
For its first meeting of the season, the Friends of the Saratoga Libraries presents two mystery writers from the South Bay on Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. in the Community Room of the Saratoga Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave. Jonnie Jacobs, an attorney and a former English teacher and counselor at Saratoga High School, has written six novels in two ongoing mystery series.
Lora Roberts not only lives in Palo Alto, but has chosen that city as the setting for her mystery novels. The program is free, and the Friends welcome guests and prospective members.
